A Retrospective
of the World Haiku Open Forum (haikuforum)
between 12/99 and 12/00
The World Haiku Club
(Est. 1998), flagshipped by the World Haiku Festival 2000,
instituted the World Haiku Open Forum, popularly known as
haikuforum, a
discussion mailing list on YahooGroups.com. The forum is moderated by Susumu
Takiguchi, Chairman of the World Haiku Club (World Haiku Festival 2000). Today,
the flagship list is WHChaikuforumworkshop.
Through these pages, you can take
a retrospective tour of our activities and growth. A wealth of haiku and related
verse may be accessed through haikuforum's YahooGroups archives. Here you'll
find informative links from archives, highlighting the various kukai, the Kansho
Column, Debating Chamber, Sijo Seminar and Renku Seminar. These may be useful in
your studies.
Please

WHC's Official Website for each category.
World Haiku Open Forum Begins
The World Haiku Open Forum began
opened to the public on December 8, 1999. Word went out to haiku lovers
throughout the internet and haiku communities.
1-1-00 Official Launch of World Haiku Club Open Forum
The World Haiku Open Forum was
officially launched on New Year's Eve 1999. It's quick growth and active
participation led to learning seminars, discussion and debate forums, and kukai.
As early as March 2000, the popularity of the discussion list began to hint at a
need for expansion!
Hatsu-Kukai
(New Year Haiku Contest) 1999-2000
The New Years Hatsu-Kukai drew 342
haiku from 60 international haijin. Three winners and four honorable mentions
were selected soley by Jim Kacian, editor of the journal, Frogpond. Susumu
Takiguchi selected "editor's favorites" and four World Haiku Forum
participants served as "guest selectors," who selected their own
personal favorites. All the winning and selected haiku and commentaries may be
enjoyed on the Hatsu-Kukai 2000 pages, herein.
WHC/WHF Haikuforum Renku Seminar 2000
Presented by Paul McNeil
Linking of haiku is a natural and
pleasurable activity with haiku mailing list groups. Almost as soon as the forum
had opened, participants began to compose free-renku (contemporary versions of
renga which are loosely structured and often spontaneous). Interest and
discussion among members led to the seminar, Traditional
Renku in English, led by member Paul MacNeil.
WHC Sijo Seminar 2000
Presented by Larry Gross & assited by
Elizabeth St Jacques
Member interest in the classic
Korean poetry genre, sijo, prompted a four-month long Sijo Seminar. Dr. Larry
Gross led the seminar and was joined by Elizabeth St Jacques, who assisted in
the c & c of participants' sijo offerings. Larry and Elizabeth are in the
forefront of the Western sijo movement.
WHC

Tundra, judged and selected the winning entries.

WHC Kansho (Appreciation) Column 2000
Presented by Susumu Takiguchi & James
Karkoski
This active "discussion column" was
designed to take up one specific haiku at a time and examine it in depth.
Voluntary comments, and discussion could take place concerning a haiku poem
written by participants, or by classical or modern masters. Debate included why
and how a particular haiku is good or bad or indifferent (mostly good) from all
angles, including the technique of translation. You can link to review the
archived Kansho Column discussions including selections of haiku by Chiyo-jo
(1703 - 1775), James Hackett, Nick Virgilio and Basho
WHC Debating Chamber 2000
Hosted by Susumu Takiguchi
The Debating Chamber on haikuforum
provided lively presentation of differing viewpoints on a variety of haiku
related subjects. A subject was introduced by the host, or one which had arisen
in spontaneous discussion on haikuforum would be furthered in the form of debate
through the chamber's function. due to its popularity, it was moved, along with
the Kansho Column, to the new WHCacadamia mailing list, instituted January
1, 2001.
WHC/WHF Haiga Gallery 2000
Maintained by Debi Bender
Members' haiga, photographic
images, art and interactive haiku. The World Haiku Open Forum includes artists
and photographers as well as poets. The visual arts, haiku and other Asian genre
poetry naturally combine with visual images. Some members created contemporary
haiga for the gallery. All members were invited to participate in the gallery
which was made interactive; haiku could be written by members to accompany the
graphics. (Today, WHChaikumultimedia
replaces the Haiga Gallery, and the World
Haiku Review publishes its column as well as an e-Cards
Gallery.)
Various Group Projects 2000
Free Renku
