Important
Announcement!
| R.
H. Blyth Award at WHC |
 |
The World Haiku Club is pleased to
announce the creation of an annual haiku-related award, called “R. H. Blyth
Award” at WHC. This will be a top award among a number of high-standard awards
which WHC will be introducing and will aim at becoming one of the most
prestigious and important haiku-related awards in the world. Several other WHC
awards are being planned, including the one which is under discussion with
another organisation run by eminent haiku poets.
The “R. H. Blyth Award” will reflect what the bearer of the name represents,
which is enormous, and will be given to those whose work will not only be
excellent from their local characteristics and diversity but also will have
certain bearings on the wider scope of world haiku. This will be taken into
consideration when the guidelines for entry will be worked out. It is envisaged
that a panel of judges will be formed from among the top international haiku
poets and critics (not necessarily by fame only), part of whom will change every
year, having different policies and perspectives for each year but following the
same underlying principles.
Fees will be chargeable for participation in this competition, as in the case of
most of the international haiku competitions and awards. It is hoped that the
“R. H. Blyth Award” will be self-financing as the fee income will be used
for prize money and for administrative costs. The “R. H. Blyth Award” will
be widely advertised so that it will be able to have genuine world-wide coverage
and scope. English will be used for entries and judging for the time being.
Works written in other language, therefore, will have to have really good
English translations (which, incidentally, is hoped to assist the development of
good translation into English from all other
languages).
The first “R. H. Blyth Award” will be administered to coincide with the
World Haiku Festival 2002 (a sequel to the WHF2000) which will be held in
September this year in Yuwa Town, Akita, Japan. It will be incorporated into the
45th Rogetsu Short Verse Competition. Details will be announced in due course.

Awards
The World Haiku Club has created
an important annual award, called the “R. H. Blyth Award”. This year,
considering the fact that the WHF2002 is partly dedicated to R. H. Blyth, it has
been decided that the R. H. Blyth Award will be appropriated to WHF2002 Haiku in
English and English Translation Competition. The details will be finalised by
the panel of judges. There is a possibility for other awards or prizes to be
considered as well.
